Remote Working

Remote Working Tech Power Mobile Devon Caravan

Carlsberg don’t do Remote Worker offices, but if they did …

So, I’m in Devon, I can see the sea from the van (I can see Lundy Island) and I’ve got to look at a big proposal this morning. I’m just awaiting a new edited version from my business partner so I’ve got a few mins to write while the family is out enjoying the sun.

The setup is pretty cool, I have full speed HSDPA Internet via a Three Pay As You Go dongle (getting about 2.5MB download) … It has to go out of the sunroof on a USB cable to get 5 bars. I have the XP netbook and a PSP hooked up to the TV with a video lead, just for some extra ambient tunes (or for the kids ripped DVD’s).

I’m just wondering if the addition of an iPad is actually going to help my remote working. I’ve just had to download a 25MB Word viewer as the Google Docs server was down (just when I needed it most) and am currently editing a Word document. I’m not sure I could achieve this with only an iPad – maybe I could by using remote desktop and connect to a machine in the office, but this heavily relies on an internet connection.

I know there will be loads of offline methods and apps designed to work round these issues (I use Evernote on the iPhone daily), but just right now, at this moment, I’m questioning my ‘NEED’ for an iPad.

Anyway, I’ve just been pinged on Instant Messaging that the doc is ready … so, I’ll finish the doc then get out in the sun … and maybe the sea too?
