Rochefort Trappist Brewery have been making beer since 1595. Tonight I’ve had a chance to try their Rochefort 10 (blue cap) for the first time in my life.
The house is deadly silent apart from the rain against the window, and the first slow sip of this dark thick foamy ale instantly conjures thoughts of the 15 Trappist monks appreciating their creation in silence. I think this ale was designed to be supped alone – by an open fire – with scriptures in hand.
Deeply malty with dark fruits and then a lingering alcohol back hit. It’s the ultra strong beer that many modern brewers attempt to make but ultimately fail as the 11.3% ABV overpowers with a sweet stickyness – but not this carefully crafted brew, it’s balanced, the ABV commands respect like a spoon of medicine that you wanted more of as a kid.
This is very special and refined – I’ll sleep well tonight.
