Posterous have recently brought out functionality for developers to create buttons that will allow Posterous users to install custom themes without having to delve into the copy and paste of the current system. With any luck, this will encourage theme designers to start considering Posterous and offer free or paid for theme designs.
I thought I’d give the new system a go, and to start with I’ve updated one of my own themes to use global elements rather than any hard coded links to my own stuff. I’ve also uploaded theme graphics to Amazon S3 to ensure the images will always be available and not dependent on my own domain or the Fish Media servers.
For example, the path to the theme images will now follow this route:
s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/mackney/theme/black/rss-button.png
When you click the new ‘Install Theme’ button you will be taken to a Posterous page as shown in the image above. If you do decide to apply the theme you will still have full control to revert back to any of your previous themes – the new theme will simply appear in your theme library.
So if anyone fancies giving the new theme a spin around the {block}, feel free to let me know about any issues or enhancements. I’ll use any feedback to ensure future themes that I put together will have what people ask for.
Anyway, I’ve created a Custom Posterous Themes Landing Page that should grow with future themes. Please check it out and let me know.

@richardmackney Brilliant Posterous theme, and brilliantly simple to install. Why can’t all themes be one-click?
